Insider Meditation Scoop: My Favorite Family Success Stories That Made It Worth It

If you know anything about me, you know I have taken some risks when it came to my family relationships. These choices were far from easy to make and could have ended in disaster. Many people were sure they would and felt obliged to tell me so regularly. Little did they know, I was connected to my choices at a very deep level and I am so glad I took the risks I had because they are paying off big time now.

Autonomy is all about making moral choices even when others do not understand what or why you are doing what you are doing. Frequently, when you choose to live from an autonomous place many will be far from supportive.

Why is this so?

Well, many people get stuck in unconscious habits and they quickly become blind to their actions. When we get trapped in this place a feedback loop has been created and reinforced. Anything outside of that loop seems bad or wrong. Think about a group of people that began smoking together. As soon as one person decides that they don't want to smoke anymore the group often shuns them. Or say you were a part of a group that was all about eating really rich foods and indulging in glutenous behavior and for whatever reason you decide you are going to eat differently. All of a sudden you don't fit into that group and they won't want you to participate with them. Is it because what you are doing is bad or wrong or what they are doing is bad or wrong?

I propose it is because the two don't support a seamless fully integrated experience. Watching a creepy movie while trying to relax, for example, these two things are diametrically opposed. Why attempt to confuse your nervous system? Why not just dive into one experience and then the other? As civilized humans, we try to integrate opposite experiences in an attempt to make everything all-inclusive.

When I came across meditation I began to change very quickly. My desires had already been shifting and that was straining my relationships, much like the two examples listed above. I could not stop my desire to follow a thread that was fulfilling a major internal desire. I attempted various times to have the two integrate. But much like the individual choosing to quit smoking while hanging out in the smoker's lounge, I found it very hard to progress in my goals when everyone around me was oblivious of what I was doing or experiencing.

Some of my family attempted to understand. Their attempts however exposed that they didn't get it.

I remember the first time this type of thing happened to me. My friend was way into jazzercise, I loved yoga. I convinced her to try yoga, 100% sure she would love it like I did if she just gave it a shot. She gave me the gift of deciding to go to a class and then reported it was like nails on a chalkboard to her! How could this be?

On a planet with 7 Billion people, we are all designed to be different. This is truly an amazing feat if you sit back and let that sink in. We have similarities, but there is not a single person on this planet that is exactly like the next. So why do we try? Why do we fight this and attempt to put everyone into a box rather than embrace their uniqueness? From a Vedic standpoint, it is because the ego likes things to be safe and controllable.

Ok. I'll get back to my choice to step away from my family life which shocked the people who loved me to the very core as I did it.

I faced a profoundly hard moment about seven years ago when I had taken a trip to see my children that lived with their father thousands of miles away from me. My children and I had been communicating regularly and having yearly visits for about three years. During that time they were being told that I was just sewing my wild oats and would return to my senses and the children. The narrative they were told left them very confused and very hopeful every time I returned that this time it would be for good. This story they were told made them believe that I didn't love them and that I was sick at some moments. Other times they were certain they had done something wrong and I didn't like them because I didn't live with them. I had tried in vain to help my family and ex-husband to understand and embrace what was going on for the children's sake. They couldn't understand that their need for me to conform to their way of life was exactly why I needed to make different choices.

Fast forward seven years; my children one by one began seeking understanding and connection to me and my choices. These young adults each came to me believing the narrative that they had been exposed to. The result of which was leading to plenty of uncomfortable life challenges for them. One by one they were exposed to a different piece of the puzzle that resonated with them. As they began to see their mother in a new light and far from the victim or devil that she had been painted as things in their life began to naturally improve.

I took a huge risk when I decided I would lead by example. The only thing I wanted for my children is that they lived the life of their choosing. I did not want to watch them compromise who they are to fit into a crowd or to stay in a loveless relationship where they needed to pretend to be something other than what they were to fit the status quo. I wanted them each to live a life that they loved so they could never conceive of wanting to purposefully end it. That day seven years ago was a painful scary risk that I knowingly took. But to me, it did not seem like a gamble. I knew that choosing to lead by example was the only way I could ensure their success. Our children frequently follow not what we say but what we do. I am pleased to discover that is absolutely the case with my children.

The greatest part of this story is that I am now capable of truly loving and supporting them in whatever choice they make, even if it is something I don't understand or agree with. I have gained the skill of allowing them to think in whatever way they do and to be confident in exposing those thoughts to me. Through their forgiveness and connection to why I made the choices I did, they can share openly their thoughts with me. This provides me with the opportunity to explore concepts with them while allowing them to be open to perspectives outside of themselves. I am careful to remind them that they are the only one who has any control over their choices. Regardless of how the world around them may attempt to convince them of some external controlling force, it doesn't exist. They alone make choices and face the resulting consequences. There is no "right" approach to their lives. No one has the absolute, omniscient answer to the riddle that is their unique life. But boy, so many people have opinions!

Learning to recognize this opinionated part of myself has also deepened my relationships with those I love. Demanding that I get to live freely, necessitates me allowing others the freedom to do the same. It has been through meditation that I have been able to recognize these self-defeating habits and make better choices. It has been my experience that gifting this to others (as well as myself) has solidified the importance of autonomous relationships that are based on unconditional love.

No One Talks About The True Blissful Purpose Of Yoga

Picture
When most people hear the word yoga they think of fitness and the various types of yoga classes held in most cities around the world now. They either love it or hate it.

The thing is if we were to utilize the correct term from which the concept of yoga came from we are not calling those activities by the correct name. What we know as yoga here in the west is actually called Asanas. I have to be honest, I don't really like this form of "yoga" all that much even though I have taught it for years.

How can that be?

Well, the truth is I do it because it helps to minimize the stress in my body. My asana practice also helps me to slow down my busy mind and be more present with my body. Over the years I have learned a great many tricks to minimize pain in my body. This is my main motivation for continuing an asana practice.

Yoga for me and countless people throughout history have a much deeper definition than fitness or exercise. Essentially yoga means bringing the busy chaotic mind of our active lives to touch upon the Inner Intelligence that is responsible for all of creation. Here is a cool excerpt from a book that explains it beautifully.

“Yoga is not a belief system or a religion nor even a philosophy — it is an extremely practical methodology for systematically expanding the conscious mind. Said another way, Yoga is the Science for overcoming the self-destructive and limiting beliefs and internal programs that keep individual life bound to the experiences of the Waking State of Consciousness — the state in which life is alternately happy and sad, loving and hating, healthy and sick — in short, dual. ”

Excerpt From: Maharishi Sadasiva Isham. “Enlightenment!: The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali.” Apple Books.

Who wouldn't want to learn how to stop undermining their capacity to experience life by learning to recognize self-defeating patterns?

When looking at it from this perspective, yoga is a mental practice that is greatly assisted through effective meditation techniques.

Not all meditation techniques are the same.

Many of the techniques or apps out there today are nothing more than what you might get at an asana class that has been mislabeled yoga. They keep your mind focussed on thoughts. These may be peaceful relaxing thoughts that bring you benefits, just like your asana practice. They have value and merit in that instance.

Truly effective meditation techniques improve the way your brain functions so that you naturally experience more of what is currently taking place. Attempting to change the function of your brain while using it in the same way you do all day and night long doesn't change it. However, training it to do something different changes its ability to function. Much like training to run a marathon changes the way the body operates so that it can perform that desired result, effective meditation techniques open your nervous system to become aware of much subtler experiences that are currently going on right before your very eyes.

Through greater conscious awareness the surface level of your mind becomes more capable of making choices. This is where the autonomy aspect of what Explore Yoga Health is all about. Greater conscious awareness allows us to connect to and move from our sense of inner knowing and connectivity, rather than being coerced into choices by authority figures.

This truly is the key that unlocks the door to your good.

But so many don't want it. They fear the unknown even though it is essentially the storehouse of wealth and fortune. Thus asanas are called yoga in the collective mind with the promise that these stretches will make you fit and healthy. Yoga has so much more to offer you than fitness and health. These are great things, and as I mentioned I utilize an asana practice for these ends. Without which my body would be very uncomfortable to live in. But through meditation, I also have access to the storehouse that is jam-packed full of wealth from which I can pull. It never disappoints. It never runs empty.

But Sivani, you aren't super rich.

When you have at your fingertips the most priceless connection that goes with you in every single experience, money is like health. It's nice to have and makes things more comfortable, but money can never touch the significance of having access to and knowing your Inner Intelligence. Again this is the aspect that holds every single atom of "you" together as well as the world around you including money. Practicing accessing this part of yourself is what yoga is all about and it is truly priceless once you have enough courage to give it a try.

Meditation Confessions: Life is Hard To Face - To Improve - Know Which Way To Look

Meditation is growing in popularity. This is largely to do with loads of studies over the past 30 years that have revealed the health and overall contentment benefits. Anything you do to slow down from the busy fight or flight state we currently live in is going to lead to a significant life benefit. What you might not know is that not all meditations are the same.

The main distinction I want to bring to your awareness is that the majority of meditation techniques utilize aspects of day-to-day life as a way to slow down and inspire the rest and digest aspects of the parasympathetic nervous system. This means they help you feel better. A yoga asana practice is an example of moving meditation. While engaged in this practice our surface mind is still quite engaged in observing as we purposefully tell it to calm down.

However, there is a type of meditation technique that is designed to distract our surface mind. The surface part of us is always worried about making choices based on past experiences aiming to prevent future suffering. When it is engaged we never get as deep of rest as we are capable of. The problems of our life constantly run, even if we get a break from being caught up in them. Through specific types of meditation, we actually give the surface mind something that it enjoys. As a result, the deeper part of us can be experienced.

What is this deeper part?

Anyone who has studied the anatomy of the human body is aware of an amazing intelligence that allows it to function. Anyone who has studied chronic disease is fully aware that the root of the problem is so much bigger than mechanical physical parts. Our bodies are affected by so many different aspects of our human experience. It is simply not black and white or "if this then that" type of equation. There is something much deeper and profound going on.

Ancient meditation practices are aware of this and know the only way to truly transform life is to connect directly with this Inner Intelligence and be receptive to the omniscient wisdom contained within. Without this connection, we are doomed to continue to make choices based on faulty or limited information.

Interestingly, enough this is where people start getting all excited about meditation and why they prefer to only utilize the surface practices. Some might say they don't want to get to know this part of themselves because they don't want to have to change (even if they know that what they are doing isn't providing them with what they want). Some think this Inner Intelligence that resides within could very well be maleficent always attempting to derail us so that we suffer. Regardless of the thought that pops into people's heads, essentially they are an expression of fear.

Being a long-term meditator with a tool that essentially turns off this surface fight or flight response completely so that I can rest deeply and experience pure potential (without form) I find the fear others struggling with amusing. I'm not judging. I have learned that often times I have held myself back from the very thing that was the solution because I somehow perceived it as being bad or scary. On and on I spun around in my discomfort regardless of others offering me viable solutions to my challenge until I finally decided I had enough and decided to try the one thing I had avoided. It seems to be a necessary part of growth, to make the choices ourselves and not blindly follow others.

Einstein is credited with saying that you can't solve a problem from the level it was created. Meditation techniques that require external stimulation or focus will necessarily keep you on the level of the problem. However, learning a technique that teaches the mind to let go of all external cues and rest deeply in pure potential allows the brilliance to shine through. This can actually be and has been measured scientifically. The frontal cortex is enlivened while all of our lower functioning aspects of the brain are completely at rest.

Being able to connect to and rest the chaotic mind in the purpose potential allows for so many doors to open for our good. Often we are just burdened with the demands of life that we can't think of anything different. Yet a few moments of deep rest quickly results in the tap of creativity to turn right back on. When life gets hard, all we have to do is look in the correct direction!

If I knew then: 4 Ayurveda Hacks To Save You Time and Peace of Mind

Picture
It can be challenging to step into more holistic choices in our lives. The fact that everything is so easy to get whenever we want it can make it very hard to make good choices. When talking to my clients that are a few things that I have discovered are very helpful, especially if you are working full time.

Crock Pot or Thermos Meals

Ayurveda encourages eating only freshly cooked foods that are organic and suitable for your body to keep your doshas in balance. Since we are all unique this involves a bit of effort on our part and it typically means there is rarely anything we can pick up to eat when out and about. Eating out at a restaurant is a wonderful thing to do on occasion, but when it is done regularly it can lead to challenges that result in chronic inflammation issues. Most food choices that are prepared for us by our favorite fast foods are rarely made from fresh ingredients. The majority of the foods are packed full of chemicals so they can sit on a shelf for years.

So we have the choice to either eat foods that aren't leading to greater health and vitality or to bring our prepared meals from home. Essentially, we are looking at the day-to-day regular choices that make a profound impact on our wellbeing. According to Ayurveda, freshly prepared food with no additives would be the most ideal way to support your body. However, this is becoming more and more clear in all areas of health care.

But if you are busy running from the demands of home life, to work duties, and anything in between then you know spending hours making a freshly cooked meal is not reasonable in our day and age. There just aren't enough hours in the day. This is where wonderful inventions like the crock pot, pressure cooker, and thermos can lead to greater success and more nutritious meals. Making a thermos lunch is easy to do in the morning and takes about 5-10 minutes. The food cooks in the sealed container resulting in a warm meal being ready when lunchtime rolls around. At the same time you are making your lunch you could prepare food in the crock pot so you have a fresh meal waiting for you when you get home. Many of the newer versions have a timer so it can kick on at the precise moment you need it to for dinner to be ready when you get home.

Buying in Bulk
When buying anything that is marked as an Ayurvedic product it can be quite expensive. To save resources you can buy herbs and spices that you know you will use regularly and combine them yourself. For example, there is something called CCF tea. It stands for cumin, coriander, and fennel. You can easily purchase all of these seeds in bulk and combine equal parts of each. This will save you tons of money!

I have also found that my favorite toothpaste company (Auromere) gives you a nice discount on many of their items if you buy them in bulk. For instance, you save $1.50 on each tube of toothpaste when you buy the 6pack as opposed to just one. This also minimizes the amount of energy used to get your toothpaste delivered. So when you know you are going to get the same toothpaste or other beauty product getting a larger amount delivered makes a difference.

Pre-measuring Ingredients
We are looking at saving time and hassle in this post. One way to do that is to have things measured out in advance. If we were to look at the example of the thermos lunch, we could spend one day lining up the entire week's worth of ingredients so they are easy to grab first thing in the morning. You might wait to cut the vegetables until the morning for the best quality. But you could have everything you need sectioned out so it is easy to pull together before work.

This is also a great idea for teas. Bringing an herbal tea to sip on throughout the day can be another very helpful way to keep your body hydrated and nourished from the herbs. Having this set out the night before so all you have to do is boil water will keep you motivated to bring your tea with you and potentially help you avoid buying sodas or other sugary drinks.

Bedside Table
Having things like essential oils and massage oils beside your bed is another time saver. For those of you that have a hard time falling asleep at night, putting oil on the soles of your feet before bed works miracles. For me, I would forget this climb into bed and then not want to get up even though it would help me sleep better. Now I leave the oils beside my bed so I can easily apply them before sliding them into my covers.

3 Simple Things To Start Today That Will Save You From the Dentists Drill

Picture
In Ayurveda, the morning routine is pretty important. The way you start your day sets the tone for the rest of the day. Waking up each morning and caring for yourself first thing will leave a lasting impression for the entire day. We won't get into all of the aspects of a morning routine here. Instead, I want to address the best way to avoid a dentist drill by simply following a few easy steps suggested through Ayurveda.

The following three tips should be done directly after getting out of bed second only to the urge to use the toilet.

Scrape Your Tongue:
When you sleep at night your body is busy getting rid of the toxins that you have accumulated through the day. Even if you live in a pristine environment there are many things accumulated that need to be discarded. The body will push many of these toxins out through your feces. But the body isn't discriminatory, it will use the sweat of your body as well as your mouth.

If you have never looked at your tongue first thing in the morning it is worth investigating. There is typically a thick coating covering the tongue. Depending on the color, the amount, and the location tell us a lot about how the body is functioning. Regardless of what is on it, that coating is full of toxins your body doesn't need. By scraping it off with a "tongue scraper" you will prevent those toxins from reentering your digestive tract.

One note on this, be gentle with your tongue. You will most likely not be able to get all of the buildups off of your tongue so don't try to keep scraping until your touch is pink all over. Instead, notice what comes off on the scraper. When you are no longer pulling thick mucus off then that is good for the day. This will help to protect the delicate taste buds on your tongue.

Oil pull:
Another tip for great hygiene in your mouth is to spend some time swishing oil in your mouth after scraping your tongue and brushing your teeth. This process has a two-fold benefit. 1. It coats your entire mouth, including the spaces between your teeth with protective oil. 2. It also helps to draw further toxins into the oil that you can then spit out so it is not reabsorbed in your body.

There has been a study done that using sesame oil (which is full of antibacterial/microbial properties) prevented the build-up of place on the teeth and minimized the number of germs in your mouth throughout the entire day. This is a very easy way to remove toxins and protect your teeth from them all day long!

Natural Ingredients:
Having been someone who struggled with swollen tender gums for many years, I was amazed at how a switch in toothpaste brought an abrupt stop to the issue. The first brand that made a huge impact is "Thieves" which has many herbs that help to combat destructive germs that live in our mouths. This can be fairly expensive to use but it is worth it to watch how quickly bleeding gums and pacified when getting the right product. Another very good product is Auromere toothpaste. There are a few varieties of flavors and it is fairly inexpensive which makes this more appealing than Thieves to me. I also noticed that their mixture of natural ingredients had the same healing effect on my mouth.

In our current day in time, we have this tendency to think that processed or man-made items are more potent. This is not always the case. If you struggle with receding or bleeding gums I encourage you to try a natural toothpaste as mentioned above and notice how quickly the relief comes to your mouth. Not only will you feel better in so many ways, but you will also begin getting raving reviews from your dentist as the health of your mouth improves!

3 Mistakes I Made When Changing My Routine & How To Avoid Suffering

So if you don't know me I have some fairly strong Pitta tendencies. Meaning as soon as I get turned onto a concept or idea I like that I can be extremely motivated to learn and or accomplish any given task to achieve the desire. I am not good at things I am not self-motivated to get behind, but boy when I want something watch out.

If you are like me, this post will be a lifesaver for you in many areas of your life.

You will most likely ignore me and do whatever you think is going to get you to your goal the fastest, but I'll write it anyway and try to prevent suffering. I want to inspire you that the "slow way" is indeed the "fast way" to success in Ayurveda.

So here are the three main ways I made things harder than they needed to be.

1. Changing too many things too fast:

Early in my Ayurveda studies, I was told not to make too many changes too fast. I was certain that I was able to follow this suggestion with ease. However, as I dove into my studies of Ayurveda, I was constantly being exposed to so many brilliant new ideas that I had to take action. I also soon discovered I was not 100% Pitta but had a great deal of Vata in me which had been leading to some discomfort. Vata loves change and will change so quickly that it is left feeling unstable and fearful.

The first year of school left me angry and controlling of others because I got it in my head that I needed to make all of these changes instantaneously (and so should everyone else!). What is the point in learning something if I wasn't going to implement it? The problem was my body couldn't keep up with all the change. My relationships began to suffer from my constant push for change. My oldest child said, "Mom you keep trying to change everything about my girlfriend, and pretty soon she won't be her anymore!"

Luckily, Ayurveda is well aware of my type. I had been reminded regularly to take it easy. When things got bad enough, I finally listened to the wisdom. I slowed down and focussed on a few changes at a time until they were easy to maintain. I also utilized my meditation practice when I desired to speed up. This helped me to see where all true, long lasting change comes from. (If you don't know, it comes from within.) Once the inside has been transformed, the outside easily reflects the change. Forcing the outside to change only creates stress and suffering.

When you become aware of this reality, so many things in life will be far more enjoyable!

2. Trying to be too perfect when in the midst of transformation:

The need for perfection is also a Pitta-driven characteristic. This drive and passion can move a person forward in amazing ways. However, there is also a possibility that perfectionism will lead to unneeded stress.

Studying ancient texts that write about the potential of human life, then looking around at our world and seeing how far we are at even scratching the surface can light a fire under a Pitta individual. This was certainly true in my case. However, spending too much time pushing for something other than what it "is" leads to imbalance in the body very quickly.

Learning humility has been a huge gift to my life. Many times other individuals want me to be perfect to "prove" to them, Ayurveda is working in my life. I get it. I have felt the same. In the past I have felt annoyance when I have listened to others expose human potential to me and they fall short of embodying the example.

Yet, every time I try to be perfect, I move further and further away from actual growth.

Learning to accept where I am and lovingly moving forward gently is where I see all the profound miracles occur in my life. What does it matter if others aren't able to connect with my miracles? Deos that make them any less miraculous to me? Wouldn't it be far more profound that any "other" I might be concerned with judging me focused on how they could move their lives forward in miraculous ways?

I have come to embrace my imperfections as a necessary part of my growth. If you are perfect at everything you do, I am most likely not the right teacher/coach/consultant for you. However, if you struggle with anything in life but want to take strides to move forward... then I'm your gal. This is what I do every day. Find places where I can challenge myself to be and do something I think is impossible. In so doing, I have become skilled at carrying myself from repeated failure to success regardless of what it looks like to others along the way. The best way to achieve your goals is to keep getting up and applying yourself.

3. Getting angry at myself for falling off the wagon:

This was an interesting internal awakening for me. I discovered that it was by allowing myself to fall off whatever wagon I had put myself on after having applied myself to it for some time, that the discomfort motivated me to get right back on.

One of the hardest changes for me was waking up early in the morning. But I committed to it, and for about 18-months, I did this without any leeway. Then I started wanting to stay in bed in the morning. The desire began becoming so strong that I had to fight myself to wake up, which hadn't happened for nearly a year. So, I decided to let myself sleep late. By allowing myself to feel the contrast and I learned firsthand why I now purposefully choose to wake up between 5:00 and 6:30 am.

You see attempting to always do things "right" created stress as explained above, but it also kept me from directly connecting to why I was making the choices I was making. Discipline is great at instigating change. Surrender to something that works is a much easier way to live long-term transformations. When I got to notice the difference between the impacts of my choices, I allowed myself to learn more about my current limitations. By discovering the limitations I am more skilled at directing my life in a more holistic manner that leads to fewer limitations. By pretending my limitations were not there, I found I only ironed them in deeper and was more frequently undermined by them.

The longer you know me the more you will discover that I am far from perfect. You will also discover that it is my imperfections and weaknesses that have been my greatest gift in transforming my potential and supporting others to do the same.

How I'd Transform Wellness Education If I Had A Billion Dollars

When some people think about having a ton of money they think about all the fun things they could do with that money. They would buy houses or cars and go on extravagant trips.

I may make some improvements in my life, but more importantly, I'd make some improvements in my surrounding communities. When you know what I know it is nearly impossible to ignore the impact that each individual has on the collective thought stream. If I had a billion dollars my efforts would be spent transforming how the world looks at wellness.

Our society has been inundated with brilliant marketers that have twisted and confused truths so they can sell a product. Many of the unhealthy things people do is a direct result of watching a tv ad or seeing something printed in a magazine. Billion-dollar companies want to remain on top regardless of what they are pushing is destroying the proper functioning of the community they sell to.

So enough complaining about what others do with their billions.

If I had the money these are the few things I'd begin implementing straight away:
  1. I'd teach anatomy to children in a fun way as soon as they enter the schooling system. With each progressive year, I'd help them connect at a deeper level to the proper functioning of their nervous system so they can be aware when it is not working properly.
  2. I'd teach proper dental hygiene to all and start with children from a very young age. This would include using organic natural toothpaste, oil pulling, flossing, and tongue scraping first thing as they got out of bed (second only to going to the bathroom).
  3. I'd create a program that taught people to mindfully eat so they wouldn't be able to ignore away the consequences certain food types have when consumed. Adults may struggle with this one for a while as they learned to reconnect with their Inner Intelligence. However, children with this information would know exactly what to eat and when to eat for their unique body needs rather than following a ridiculous set of rules based on disconnected data.
  4. I'd help them understand the power of sleep to help so many functions including our ability to learn and retain information.
  5. I'd have everyone practice a daily breathing exercise for about 5 min. This simple act would expose stressed states of the physiology while in activity to them more quickly. They would be able to make choices to stop what they are doing and still themselves if they are not in a life or death situation.

This is where I'd start but this list is not anywhere close to being comprehensive. My goal would not be to get people to eat the way I think is right or be spiritual in the way I think is best. Instead, I desire to get them to slow down enough and take care of themselves so they can determine their own best cause of action. When our bodies are healthy and we aren't constantly being bombarded with stress our thoughts are much clearer. This is what I would seek for the entire planet. Clear, calm minds that understand the value of caring for themselves. From this place, we would have a springboard for an entirely different civilization.

How To Culture Autonomous Relationships For Greater Connectivity

When thinking about wellness, health, & vitality, few people consider that it might require autonomy or why that would even matter. You might be wondering what the definition of autonomy is and feel perplexed at why I would talk about this regarding health.

For me, autonomy is the foundation of everything I desire to inspire in others and is at the root of living a healthy state of being.

Let's start at the beginning. What is autonomy? Below are a few pretty pictures with definitions I found online to make the discovery/reminder more attractive.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Notice that the last picture. It is not a definition per se but was more of a point I want to make.

Many times we seek people to empower us towards a specific goal. We often join into these relationships with the full understanding that this is the purpose of the connection. One person empowers and motivates the other who is struggling. This can be a nice helpful thing that allows us to accomplish particular goals in life. Yet, when we need another to empower us, it comes from the foundation of needing power from an external source. The risk is that we will forever need that external source of motivation or we will give up on said goal as soon as that external power source is removed.

Autonomous learning and exploration have a different foundation. The "teacher" is not the one in charge. In fact, in autonomous learning the student or group of students direct the entire agenda being taught. The teacher provides knowledge in the order and time the student/s desire to understand. The teacher acts as a sounding board, not as an authority that needs the respect and acquiescence of the students. Thus the students from day one are put in the driver's seat and face reality from the get-go. If they do not seek to learn there will not be any lessons. This means there will be no growth or development. Yet, if the student desires to learn information is given so the student can play with that information until they are ready for more.

When approaching our bodies this is hands down the best approach because it is the reality. If you do not seek to understand your body and what or how it is functioning you will forever be the victim of circumstances or external forces. Yet, dive into an experience of discovery where your desires, pains, and challenges lead the way and you are guaranteed to learn the best choices for your body. Even more importantly you will effortlessly make healthy choices because you will be the one connected to the choices being made. You will quickly lose the need for your teacher and begin exploration. However, interestingly enough, you will have a profound respect for your teacher that binds you to them in loving trust in their support for your growth for the rest of your life.

The greatest teachers in my life taught me autonomously. They allowed me the freedom to think for myself. They allowed me to make mistakes even if they ended up hurting me. They were there for me when I was ready to learn from that mistake, so I didn't make it again. They allowed me the space to choose my limitations. When I was ready, they allowed me to choose for my potential.

My aim to share what I have gained comes from the deep respect and loving trust I have in those that have helped me gain what I have to offer. I seek to support the discovery of your Inner Intelligence so you can confidently make choices based on self-motivation/government and begin living a health-filled life from that foundation! From this platform, one can be seen as truly free.

Yoga Confessions: The Worst Part of Being A Yoga Teacher In Today's World

Picture
You might think the obvious answer to the worst part of being a yoga teacher today has to do with the inability of students to do complex poses or be fit enough to constantly flow from one posture to the next like graceful swans. I guess some people might think it's students that are disruptive to the class by behaving in a way that doesn't fit the current yoga paradigm of peace, love, and chill.

For me, none of these things make any difference. Some people are fit, some are not. Some are chill, some are wound so tight the entire electrical system in the building feels them coming before they get there. Some people have "yoga bodies" (whatever that means), and some are crippled with pain. Again none of this matters to me as a yoga instructor. I could care less what the external conditions are when they come to me. I don't even seek to change those external circumstances. What I hope to instill in my students runs much deeper into the tradition of yoga. So few classes even want to go there with the potential a yoga class has to offer to transform your relationship with the Inner Intelligence of your body. This is the worst part of being a teacher for me nowadays.

It may be that I am spiritually inclined, totally lazy, or a complete rebel. For me Yoga has nothing to do with fitness or exercise, however, those are the side effects of a yoga asana practice. In my mind, the only reason to do the yoga asanas is that they help to structure my mind and body towards receptivity to the larger part of Me. For the use of this post with various readers, I will call that larger part of Me, my Inner Intelligence. This is the part that somehow keeps me functioning regardless of the stupid choices I make to create havoc in the proper functioning of my physiology. It offers me countless warning signs and alarms through particular chemical reactions of my body to steer me away from choices that will ultimately destroy my body. While also offers positive endorphins that bring peace and health to my body when I am taking actions that preserve life.

Yoga for me is opening myself (and guiding others) to listen to this communication system that is designed to help our bodies function properly leading us to greater connectivity, health, and contentment. Spending fifteen minutes to an hour first thing each day connecting to this Inner Intelligence makes a huge impact on life and anyone can do it. In fact, you don't have to do any of the pretzel positions usually associated with yoga to accomplish the type of yoga practice I speak of and you get all of the results science recognizes.

The worst part of teaching yoga in our day and age is everything is all about physical accomplishment and outward success.

So people go into these ancient practices and completely miss the purpose and benefit of them. Yoga is about uniting your small self to the Big part of you. This means there is a little you that worries about what to do and what people think. There is also the part of you that essentially holds every atom of you together in perfection every moment of every day. These two parts can be connected and communicative. There are different types of yoga practices, mental ones to help you experience this (no mat required). Other practices involve movement to prepare the mind to experience this profound connection of small self to Big Self during activity (mats are also not required). The asanas are a part of the activity that has been traditionally used to destress the body. This allows it to be prepared for the mental practices that result in the mind having first-hand experience of this larger part of itself. A secondary benefit is to train the mind to remain connected to this Inner Intelligence during the movement of our often stress-filled lives.

A yoga practice has the potential to get you in touch with the Master Builder of your life and to become friends. As a result of this relationship, you have the potential to understand exactly what the Master Builder is up to. You can discover where your active attention, as well as your choices, can impact the design. In summary, the worst part of being a yoga instructor is watching how so few are aware of the great fortune they have access to while they starve and scrounge for pocket change.

Ayurveda Tip On How To Make Your Skin Look Great & Sleep Better

Picture
Ayurveda has been known in beauty salons for a very long time. In fact, many people may not understand the potential that resides in the Science of Living because they think it is all just about beauty. If you are new to Ayurveda, you might be scratching your head right now...

What does it have to do with beauty?

If you have known Ayurveda through a high-end salon you might be wondering about the wellness connection. You might also be wondering what sleep has to do with it.

Beauty

Ayurveda is known for prolonging youth and promoting longevity. It is no wonder that one of the most vital daily treatments would result in healthy vibrant skin that others would envy. This treatment helps wrinkling skin look plumper and it is completely natural. Why would this be important? Well softer more supple skin is found very attractive to the world around us. Why do we find younger bodies more attractive? They are full of vitality. As we age we have undergone a barrage of attacks from nature and our choices. The skin will reflect this resulting in many ways. The Ayurvedic perspective is that it is wise to care for the skin from a very young age to keep you looking beautiful for as long as possible. But don't worry if you are reading this and the signs of aging are clear as day. Utilizing this treatment will bring suppleness back to your skin and you will look a million times more radiant than if you did not use it.

Health

But more than just making your skin look amazing and preventing the look of old wrinkling dried up prune skin, this treatment supports the proper functioning of your physiology. You may just think your skin is like a piece of clothing that serves no real purpose. You just have to wash it every now and then, like laundry. You may not even think what you put on your skin matters, but you will be gravely mistaken. Don't be ashamed if you think like this. Most people do. Yet, with brief exposure to the routines suggested in Ayurveda as well as an anatomy class you begin to make some profound connections.

For one thing, your skin plays an important role in defense against foreign intruders. The skin supports the removal of toxins from the body through the sweat glands. For those of you that have skin disorders, this function of removing toxins from your blood is the true source of the issues and they can be easily remedied through a few aspects of Ayurvedic treatments. You can even absorb nutrients through your skin putting less demand on the digestive system to extract them. Surprisingly the skin is even better at absorbing some nutrients like magnesium than your digestive tract. The skin also helps to utilize the power of the sun to create vitamin D while producing melanin to protect us from radiation.

Abhyanga

Enough already! What do I have to do to take care of my skin?

Ayurveda teaches that a daily head-to-toe organic oil massage before showering is the secret to looking young longer as well as resolving many chronic health challenges.

What? Head to toe? My hair as well?

The answer is...

It depends.

The ideal is to do your entire body head to toe. If you were royalty this treatment would be done every day for preventative measures. Obviously, time and resources are not an issue for those with vast amounts of money and people to help keep them motivated. But even these individuals may not be oiled every day if their particular body doesn't require it. A full-fledged Kapha is oily and supple, to begin with. Adding more doesn't create balance it does the opposite. For these individuals, dry brushing to stimulate the skin may be a better option.

I could go on and on with potential instances where the oil may not be advisable or only advisable with a combination of other treatments. But the truth is this is where seeing a consultant to look at your specific balances/imbalances is truly worth your investment as it is the most advantageous in refining what your body needs. Many people come across Ayurveda, read a post like this then get frustrated because it doesn't work for them or leads to problems. This is the result of thinking you can read an article on a topic like say brain surgery and expect to be able to execute the procedure. Your body, emotions, mental processing, and spiritual experience play a huge part in what needs to take place for your particular circumstances to come into balance resulting in the proper functioning of your nervous system.

For many, however, a daily oil massage has magnificent benefits and no dire side effects that you need to fear. You don't even have to do your entire body. You can start with just your feet for example. For people who have a hard time falling asleep or sleeping through the night, this is a very wise place to start. Simply put some oil like coconut, sesame, or almond oil on your feet about 30 min before going to sleep. Depending on the oil you choose you might want to put a pair of socks on for a while so you don't make an oily mess all over the place!

I could write more on this topic but it would be easier to talk about it live. Feel free to reach out for information on the Ayurveda Basics class that I teach to help you understand how to apply daily Abhyanga into your life to improve your health and make you look amazing.

The purpose of this blog is to allow Sivani to express thoughts on Ayurveda, yoga & meditation that are not typically found when googling the topics. Sivani's deepest desire is to encourage autonomous living in all people. There are no infallible persons to whom one can turn for perfect guidance to ensure success. When it comes all the way down to it, we are each responsible for our choices regardless if others have led, will lead, or actively attempt to lead us in any direction either for our good or our destruction. Even the best-intentioned individuals make grievous mistakes. Yet, within each individual is an Infallible Source that governs all of existence. Through exploration and discovery, individuals can connect to and build a strong relationship with this Source and thus make their own choices based on their moral objectivity. Does this approach come at an expense? Potentially. But blindly following others has proven to be just as dangerous. Stimulating others to approach any and all exploration to deepen their first-hand relationship with the Inner Intelligence active within the confines of their nervous systems is Sivani's life's mission. The more this is done, the more the Inner Intelligence permeates and pervades all of creation and will be unmistakable.
